The Rankings Rankings

Rankings are updated each morning between 6AM - 8AM PST. Rankings will be limited to 500 per person each day. This is not limited through the site, but will be when updating each day.

Getting Started:

It's easy to get started, just Create a Login with your Bunt ID and complete some rankings! Every single choice you make goes towards building out rankings for all Bunt inserts.

After you've ranked a few cards, check out the rankings, compare some cards, and chat with other Bunters. Just because we've had a lot of rankings done, don't feel like you are not needed. We are only seeing the tip of the iceburg with rankings and there is still a lot of work to be done!

Logins are now LIVE!

I'm happy to announce that Logins are now in place! Nothing about the site has changed other than if you want to join the leaderboards or Chat with your Bunt username, you must create a profile. As profiles are created I will send a trade with a note to your Bunt username to verify it is you (however this step does not stop you from getting started immediately). If you send me a 1-1 trade it may help speed up the process.

A note about 'Confirm Codes' - these ARE NOT secure passwords. There is not encryption happening and these should be chosen as something totally unimportant to you. This is the reason the are not called 'Passwords'. This is simply a layer of protection against someone impersonating you on this site.

Lastly, Logins opens the door to greater customization and I'm excited to say that will come in due time. Thanks for hanging out, I'm really excited about this growing community.

Weekly BoB Giveaway

Each week on Monday there will be a giveaway of the previous day's White BoB. This card is usually around a 450 count card and has had some pretty great names so far.

Entry:
Rank 700 match ups during the week and you'll be entered into a random drawing for the card.

Rules:
You must actually 'rank' the cards with some thought. Anyone simply clicking the same button over and over will be removed from consideration. This is being tracked and checked for daily.

How to Read the Rankings

Overall Advice to Reading Rankings:
The best way to get a sense of the Rankings and how a card is valued vs. other cards is to try different filters within the Rankings. Find a card and look at its Rank & Score and filter around them. Multiple filters can be used at once to gain a greater understanding of where that card fits in value vs. others.

Rank: The Overall Ranking of the card. For example: a rank of 20 means it ranks 20th out of all 3,400+ cards.

Score: This is the stat that ranks all the cards. The average Score of all cards is 1,500. Currently, 90% of cards have a Score between 1,350 and 1,650 but that will spread out as more rankings happen. Basically, the higher the Score, the better.

Score+: This is a stat that tells the card's value versus other cards of the same count and whether or not it's a signature card. A Score+ of 0 is average. A great Score+ is greater than 3.0. Most Score+ values range between -5.0 and 5.0 but it's not capped in either direction.

Player Rankings are in Beta because the exact formula to calculate the Player's Rating has yet to be solidified.

Also, the default view is currently any player with at least 10 cards because Ratings for Players with less cards can be weighted too heavily in either direction.

Player Rating has a similar range to a Card's Score+.

A brief explanation of the Player Rating: for each card a player has, we look at its Score+ relative to the average Score+ of the card's Series. We measure how much it is over or under performing against the other cards in the Series. Then we take the average of each one of those values for the players to get the Player Rating. Finally, we give a slight adjustment for how many cards a player has, the more the better. The basic idea is that we are looking at an Average Score+ for a player while taking out the variance from the sets the player is in. What should be left, is just the value of the player on the card independent of all other factors (since Score+ already accounts for the Card Count and whether or not it's a Signature card.

Top 5 Designed Cards [Early Leaders]

The Top 5 best looking cards are generated by users ranking cards for Design under the Rank cards tab. Similarly to value rankings, each card has a Score. Adjustments to the Score are caluclated similarly to the value Score adjustments, an upset pick will move a Score up more than a favorited one.

In the early going THE TOP 5 CARDS WILL CHANGE OFTEN and rankings will not become stable until we get a few thousand rankings completed.

Overall Advice When Comparing Cards:
It's best to compare cards when you've already got a couple in mind. By default, the cards below are ranked #99 and #100. This should be a great tool in a heads up trade situation, especially in Signature vs. non-Signature decisions where Rank, Score and Score+ can help you gauge the positioning of each card and whether or not it's a favorite. If you need a little background, check the notes (more are being added daily & you can help if you feel like there is one needed).

Rank: The Overall Ranking of the card. For example: a rank of 20 means it ranks 20th out of all 3,400+ cards.

Rank Percentile: What percentile of rank the card is in. For example a 90% Rank Percentile means that it ranks in the top 90% of all cards.

Feature is in Beta because errors may be present in the processes surrounding it. How are the rankings calculated?

The rankings are calculated through a modified Elo rating system. It was originally created for ranking chess players but is used today in lots of different areas. The basis of Elo rating is a player Score, or in our case, a card Score. The rankings put together by listing card Scores from high to low. So how does a card achieve a higher or lower score than another? In the beginning, all cards start on equal ground, each with a score of 1,500. Through randomly selected head to head match ups the scores are adjusted, which is what you are doing by ranking cards. By picking a card, you are raising that card's Score and in turn, lowering the Score of the other. What makes Elo rating special, is that takes into account the probability of a card winning a given match up.

The probabilities of each card winning a match up are calculated by the following formulas:
P(Card1 wins) = 1 / (1+10^((Score2 - Score1) / 400)) P(Card2 wins) = 1 / (1+10^((Score1 - Score2) / 400)) Where Score1 & Score2 are the Scores for Card1 & Card2 respectively.
After a winner has been chosen from the match up, the Scores for the two cards are adjusted.
If Card1 wins then the new Scores are calculated as follows:
New Score1 = Score1 + K * P(Card2 Wins) New Score2 = Score2 - K * P(Card2 Wins)
If Card2 wins then the new Scores are calculated as follows:
New Score1 = Score1 - K * P(Card1 Wins) New Score2 = Score2 + K * P(Card1 Wins)
The K in the formulas above is called the 'K-factor' and is simply a factor by which you allow a card's Score to increase or decrease. The higher the K, the more the Scores will adjust by. Currently our K is set to 12.

So basically, in a match up, if a card has a much higher Score than another, it will favor that card to win and thus reward it less for winning the match up and penalize it more for losing it.

How do you choose the match ups?

To start, the first card is randomly selected. We take a look at the Score of the first card and then limit the second selection to be a card with a Score within a certain amount of the first. Right now that value is 110. The one limiting factor to this interval is the amount between the Score of the 1st overall card and the 2nd overall card (and similarly the worst and 2nd to worst scoring cards). Because we want to include all cards, the interval will continue to increase as time goes on, especially with a unanimous best card.

How often are the card rankings updated?

I try to update the card rankings every morning between 6AM-8AM PST. It may happen a little bit later on the weekends. I'll do my best to communicate if there is a day when rankings will not be updated.

So why are the card rankings not updated on the fly?

There are a couple reasons, but the main one is that it provides a level of control on my part. Currently there is nothing from stopping someone from going and clicking the same button over and over to try and sabotage the rankings. Fortunately, I'm able to monitor that and can easily filter out any rankings that do not seem legit. The other reason is that you don't want to be looking at a rankings table, then come back 5 minutes later and have it look completely different.

How often are new cards added to the site?

Currently, cards are updated every week or two. In the future I'd like this to be done every morning along with the rankings, however, updating the cards is the most labor intensive process to running the site. If this place ever gets big enough, it would be cool for cards to go up right after they are announced, but we are a far way away from that. There is currently one other person helping in this aspect of the site, but we could always use more people. If you are interested, let us know!
